The following is an excerpt from my soon to be published book entitled, The Waymaker Principles.
My business partner and friend, Dean Banks, is one of the most positive people I know. He has a phenomenal way of finding the best, even in the worst of situations. This decision to be positive is paramount to his personal and business success. He has been practicing this commitment to being positive since long before we met. He may have been born with a naturally positive disposition. I don't know for sure, but I do know for him the glass is always "half full." What's more is that he is infecting the world around him with his positive thinking. In fact, evidence of this is best seen in the actions of those closest to him.
Some years ago, I met Dean's then four-year old son, Caleb, for the first time. I was struck by how polite and extremely bright he was. What was even more striking was his attitude. One morning Caleb was in the office for a visit with his mom. She indicated that Caleb was suffering with a sinus infection. Any other kid, any other person for that matter who felt bad would have responded to my greeting differently than Caleb. I simply asked him the standard question you ask someone you meet who has a sinus infection, "how are you feeling?" Caleb responded enthusiastically with a smile, "I feel a little great." A little great...that's the worst he could think to say. Amazing! For Caleb it was the only way he knew to respond because it was what he had heard from his parents since birth. I have noticed many times since that day, when you ask Caleb how he is doing, his automatic response is "I'm Great." Even when he is having a less than perfect day, he's great!
Feeling great and thinking positively is an attitude. Attitude drives behavior. If you want to feel bad all the time, you can. As for Caleb, he is already committed to positive thinking.
Caleb's Creed can transform anyone from an "also ran" to a Waymaker when you internalize this thinking. Caleb's Creed confirms that being positive is more than thinking positively. It is being able to have hope amid despair, to find promise in poverty, determination while climbing, endurance while running, and optimism when failing. it is the ability to see the possibility in the impossibility.
