Quality Leadership Tips For You: The Quality Leader’s Life
An Introduction To Leader-I-Tis: What is it?
Leader-I-Tis is a horrible disease that attacks once healthy organizations and severely impairs them, rendering them mostly ineffective and impotent. Leader-I-Tis is the leading cause of broken relationships and the killing of vision in an organization. Highly contagious, those without a strong backbone are highly susceptible to infection. If detected early, there is a cure that may save the organization from irrelevance. If Leader-I-Tis is ignored and rationalized away, a slow and painful death of the organization is the certain outcome.
Let me tell you a story about what it is like to live in the fray and learn how to live above the fray. In a “perfect world” (yeah, right), we would work in environments of grace where everything that affected us went our way. We want be treated fairly. We want to be honored. We want to be considered as valuable by the organization. We want others to understand us just as we want to understand others. We want to expect all of this, and so much more. And we would be kidding ourselves, wouldn’t we? Remember, we are not in a perfect world. No perfect organization, no perfect family, no perfect business, no perfect church, and most certainly, no perfect Christian.
One of the distinguishing marks of an effective leader is to be able to lead when things are not going his or her way. An effective leader still leads even though he or she is not treated fairly. A gifted leader leads without having to be honored by his or her superiors and peers. A leader who is secure in his or her skin is able to lead (and bear fruit) in spite of others who either refuse to lead or are incapable of leading. A secure leader presses on, even in the midst of the most challenging of circumstances. How important is leadership? Leadership specialist John Maxwell states that everything rises and falls on leadership.
Most anyone can lead if the circumstances are easy. But what are we to do when we serve in a hostile environment? This much is true: it is during the most challenging of times where we experience our greatest growth as a leader. Do the biblical principles of leadership “work” while we are in the fray? Has Leader-I-Tis crept its way into your organization? Is there a reliable antidote? We will explore some acute leadership problems and even raise more questions in the next blog posting on Wednesday.
