“Steering Organizations To New Horizons.”
Effective Leadership Begins With Self-Care
I am in the kind of business where I give a lot of myself (willingly, I might add) to my clients. I love teaching principles that I have lived out and impart what I’ve learned to others. I give, and give and give . . . and if I’m not careful I’ll give out of emotional and mental energy if I allow my own tank to run dry. I need to pace myself so there will be enough of me to go around.
I am certain that many of you run the same occupational risk as leaders. As leaders, we love to work and we love to give. We get a rush because we love what we do. But as I have come to discover, adrenalin will only carry me so far. Everyone needs constant refueling. Here are a few things I seek to do:
1. I try to limit the number of hours I work. And when I am home, I am home.
2. I try to get out of town for an occasional weekend with my family.
3. I love playing golf. It gets me outside where I can enjoy God’s creation apart from the buzzing of my cell phone.
How do you fill your tank? I’d love to hear your ideas.
If you need help working through the process consider using the resources at Coates and Associates, Inc. We would consider it an honor to visit with you about developing a process forward.
