A few weeks ago I met Rudy Ruttiger, the real "Rudy"! He was enlightening, engaging, and truly an older version of the character played by Sean Astin in the movie by the same name. His inspiring story of a dreamer whose focus to play football at his beloved Notre Dame University draws a terrific picture of the life of a Waymaker. While his life after Notre Dame did not result in a pro football career, he continued to contribute. He became a parent, a salesman, and a committed citizen investing his life in others.

Defining Moments


"When a defining moment comes, you define the moment or the moment defines you." This quote is from the movie "Tin Cup," with Kevin Costner playing the main character, Roy McAvoy.

While watching the movie "Tin Cup" this weekend, for what must be the 1000th time, I heard the above referenced quote differently than all the other times. Where was I before? The movie was filled with micro moments when the main character, Roy McAvoy is confronted with what are portrayed as "defining moments.

     A couple of months ago I was traveling to Florida to watch my son, Luke, and his college golf team compete in a tournament. While traveling down I-95, I noticed that it was just before 11:00 a.m. and I felt the need to worship with my friends at church back home. I decided to give “live streaming” a try on my IPhone. I was able to access the website at the church and pull up the morning service in progress. That’s right, for the next hour, I not only listened to the music and an inspiring sermon by Pastor Brad Lewis, but when possible, I could even glance at the screen.
