Determination and Perseverance...Waymaker Essentials!

A few weeks ago I met Rudy Ruttiger, the real "Rudy"! He was enlightening, engaging, and truly an older version of the character played by Sean Astin in the movie by the same name. His inspiring story of a dreamer whose focus to play football at his beloved Notre Dame University draws a terrific picture of the life of a Waymaker. While his life after Notre Dame did not result in a pro football career, he continued to contribute. He became a parent, a salesman, and a committed citizen investing his life in others.

Three Sure Ways To Build A Winning Team

I’ve been in the leadership development and training business for over twenty years. Along the way, I’ve observed that one of the most important tasks a leader can accomplish is to build a winning team. When this happens, it becomes a “win-win” for both the leader and the team. Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? Well, building a winning team does not come easy nor seldom does it come quickly.

Do What You Are Really Good At Doing & Delegate the Rest
(Part 3)

As a leader in your organization I’m assuming that you are really good at doing what you do. You have taken your strengths and leveraged them in a way where you live in your professional sweet spot. It has been my experience that when a leader begins to slip, it is often due to neglecting what they have been gifted to do and move into other areas where their strengths are not as obvious.

The Twelve Leadership Failures That Sink An Organization (10-12)

Remember my definition for Leader-I-Tis?

Leader-I-Tis is a horrible disease that attacks once healthy organizations and severely impairs them, rendering them mostly ineffective and impotent. Leader-I-Tis is the leading cause of broken relationships and the killing of vision in an organization. Highly contagious, those without a strong backbone are highly susceptible to infection.

Good Communication Takes More Than Words

The Best Communicators Know How to Connect With Others

One of the greatest challenges a leader will face is to be an effective communicator. Lee Iacocca once stated,“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can't get them across, your ideas won't get you anywhere.”Communication goes way beyond just the words that are spoken. Good communicators know that their words, the tone of their words and even their body language speaks loudly and clearly.

Keeping Your Team On Track

In the business world busyness does not always indicate profitability. Activity does not always equate to accomplishment. Priority on the right projects and with the right people is what leads to success. In other words, in order to keep the main thing the main thing everyone on the team needs to be on the same page. This requires what I call, “A prioritized mindset.”

Many organizations get off message when “missional drift” takes place within the team.

Leading Your Team In Building Momentum

One of the winning qualities of an organization is momentum. With it, energy within the team is created and everyone is inspired to accomplish greater things. Without it, morale is low and enthusiasm for the mission wanes. Momentum usually begins with the leader.

In order for an organization to grow, the leader has to lead and cast vision to his or her team. Writer Elanor Doan stated,

To The Victor Go The Spoils

One of the greatest sports victories in my lifetime was when the USA hockey team upset the Soviet Union during the 1980 Winter Olympics. Known by many as the “Miracle on Ice,” ateamof collegiate players beat a more-skilled, seasoned, professional team consisting of members from the Red Army. The odds were stacked against the Americans. A crushing defeat for the young Americans would be only a matter of time.

Three Essential Choices When Building Your Inner Circle

There is No I in Team

Napoleon Hill, in his book entitled, Think and Grow Rich noted the importance of having a circle of mentors from whom we can learn and emulate. If we are going to succeed as leaders we need a trusted group, an inner circle of sharp advisors who are not yes men but men and women who know what it takes to get the best out of us. I am certain there are plenty of so-called self-made men who have succeeded as leaders in business.
